Saltgate's Mark Stockwell completes 10k walk for Cancer Research

11 October 2022

There’s a bug going round at Saltgate, and thankfully it’s not covid!

The running bug has got many members of our team going out, getting active, and testing their endurance, all for some great causes.

One of these people is Mark Stockwell, Associate Director in our London office.

He completed the Shine Night Walk in York earlier this month to raise money for Cancer Research.

We spoke to Mark after he completed the 10 kilometre walk to find out how it went.

What made you want to get involved with the Shine Night Walk?

Raising money for cancer research charities and walking are two things I like to do.

Too many people I know, including myself, have suffered from, or have been impacted by cancer. Current statistics suggest that one in two people born in the UK after 1960 will get cancer in their lifetime.

Over the last 40 years, Cancer Research UK's work has helped double the breast cancer survival rate, been a key player in the development of radiotherapy, and played a role in developing eight of the world’s top 10 cancer drugs.

There’s still more to be done so we hope money raised will help move the statistics closer to three in four people surviving their cancer for 10 years or more by 2034.

Have you done anything like this walk before?

I’ve done many walks to raise money for cancer charities in the past, including walking the length of Hadrian’s Wall, a virtual walk from John O’Groats to Land’s End, the around-island walks in both Guernsey and Jersey, and several organised walks like the Shine Night Walk.

What impact do you hope this challenge will have?

As well as funding vital research and potential cures, I hope it’ll help raise general awareness of the fight against cancer.

How can people support you and this charity?
