The importance of work experience

11 August 2021

‘It’s important to see if you enjoy this type of work – I hadn’t worked in an office before, so it’s good to get this kind of experience.’

Entering the professional world can be difficult, scary, and even confusing.

Our summer programme provides a foundation for students to find their interests and strengths in a professional environment.

Summer intern Ellie Binet shares why she believes getting work experience is so important.

Where are you at in your studies?

I’ve just finished my A-levels where I studied Italian, French, and psychology, so I’m now waiting for results day. With the changes in exams after Covid, it was definitely a strange way to be assessed, but it was good because we had lots of different opportunities to prove ourselves. I’m hoping to study French and Italian at Durham University or Exeter University.

What’s your role and what are your responsibilities within Saltgate?

I’m in the payments team and I’m learning all about making payments from my buddy Aaron and my manager Andy. Everyone’s been really helpful and I’m enjoying it.

What are your hobbies or what do you do for fun?

During summer, I love to go swimming and paddle boarding – in winter it’s a bit more difficult with the weather. I used to do horse riding, but I got quite busy with A-levels so didn’t have much time for it. I live on a farm so I help my dad with making hay and planting potatoes too.

What did you want to be when you were young?

I wanted to be a vet. It wasn’t the best career choice as I’m scared of animals like birds and hamsters – it wasn’t my destiny!

What’s your favourite part of your role?

I really enjoy working with my team, and when I do payment packs and it all goes well it’s so rewarding!

What’s been the best experience you’ve has as an intern at Saltgate?

The socials have been fun – we did our own ‘Would I Lie To You?’ the other week. I feel like everyone’s been so nice and welcoming, and I’ve been able to settle in.

What’s been the most surprising thing?

I would say how well I’ve been able to get used to the role and the office. I thought it might’ve taken me a few days to get used to, but from my first day I felt very welcomed.

What advice would you give a student considering an internship or work experience?

Apply first of all! It’s important to see if you enjoy this type of work – I hadn’t worked in an office before, so it’s good to get this kind of experience. Give it a go and try your hardest as it will be appreciated.

What’s your favourite part of Saltgate culture?

I like how everybody is on one floor and there’s no offices – you feel like everyone is accessible to you and you’re able to speak to anyone.
