Senior Fund Administrator at Saltgate

Life as a Senior Fund Administrator at Saltgate

18 March 2021

Ever wondered what it’s like to be in a senior role at Saltgate?

We spoke to Eve McCarthy, a Senior Fund Administrator in our Luxembourg office to find out about the role and her experience at Saltgate.

What’s your role and what are your responsibilities within Saltgate?

I am a Senior Fund Administrator based in the Luxembourg office.

What is your professional background?

I’ve been at Saltgate for five and a half years and my initial role here was my first in this field. I have a business degree majoring in marketing and entrepreneurship and a law degree.

What’s the best part of your role?

I get to work with a range of clients, transactions and within different aspects of the business – there’s always something new and interesting and I’m learning every day.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a Senior Fund Administrator?

My advice would be to not worry about not knowing certain things or having a background in fund administration as you very much learn as you go along.

It’s useful to know the market and elements happening within it – studying law has helped me also. I would recommend interacting with everyone you work with to learn from them too.

What’s the biggest misconception about your job?

I think the term ‘administrator’ can be a big misconception. People may think it’s an assistant-type role but it’s much more than that with lots of responsibilities.

Why did you go for the role you are in?

I wanted to try something different after finding I didn’t want to be a solicitor in the legal field exactly. I found that my business, marketing, and legal background mixed well together for a role in fund administration – when I was studying accounting, I ended up using knowledge from everything I had studied previously.

What’s the weirdest or funniest thing that’s happened to you at work?

In the Luxembourg office we have good comradery so I’m always laughing, but it would have to be the requests received from Simon– he always gets me involved in funny things going on at Saltgate.

What trait in a person do you most admire and deplore?

Loyalty is an important trait for me, and I admire someone who is very loyal. Being fake would be the trait I most dislike – I’d prefer you to be upfront and honest with me.

What do you do for fun?

It varies – before lockdown I was really into playing squash and travelling more. I read a lot, enjoy being with friends and going on walks.

Who’s your favourite author?

I couldn’t name one as I like anything and everything!

Who’s your hero?

My parents.

What’s the funniest joke you know by heart?

A man walks into a pub in Luxembourg, starts talking to a guy and asks “what’s the quickest way to France?

The guy replies “Are you driving?”

“Yes” he said.

“Well, that’s the quickest way!”

What makes someone succeed at Saltgate?

If you’re a hard worker and take the time to interact with all teams you’ll succeed. I think it’s important to be someone who looks to continuously learn, gets involved in all projects and takes ownership of your work. Seeking out advice from all levels of the business will also help you succeed.

What’s your favourite part of Saltgate culture?

I’m a big advocate of cross jurisdiction interaction so the community of Saltgate is my favourite part. I’m usually in Jersey twice a year, so I’ve now formed friendships with people in different jurisdictions.
