Nurturing careers at Saltgate

27 April 2021

At Saltgate, we want to nurture talent and help people reach their potential.

We sat down with Kate Rogers, Head of Corporate Services – Administration, and an Associate Director, who’s been with us since she was a trainee.

Read Kate’s interview below to find out more about her journey and progression, and despite our growth, what has remained the same and kept Saltgate special for her.

What is your professional background?

After graduating from the University of Birmingham with a degree in Ancient History, I joined Saltgate as a Trainee Administrator. After spending eight years in fund administration on the client facing team, I wanted a new challenge and moved to the Corporate Services team.

How did you get to Saltgate?

After university I interviewed with a number of fund administration firms, but Saltgate was only one that I wanted to join. I wanted to learn on the job and at the time it was a small business with less than 20 people in Jersey, so I felt I wouldn’t just be a number and would have access to senior people in the industry. Despite Saltgate’s growth I still get the ‘small company feeling’ I had when I first joined.

What’s your role and what are your responsibilities within Saltgate?

My remit is varied – my team covers matters to do with risk management including coordinating the implementation of new legislation or regulation. We also assist with new business onboarding, exits, high risk transactions and reviews of our EUAs, as well as managing the Saltgate control environment, including the ISAE processes.

What advice would you give to someone who wants your role?

There’s lots of opportunity at Saltgate so make the most of it and try new things. You are the only person that can hold you back so get your teeth into it, involve yourself, and approach things with a positive attitude and you’ll be onto a winner.

What’s the best and most challenging thing about your role?

The people I work with are the best part – I love coming to work and working with the best direct team and wider team. Everyone I work with is so supportive and will always make time to help.

The most challenging aspect of the job is consistently delivering to a high standard. We can be busy and so it is important to manage the workload, know the priorities, and deliver but with the support of the team this is no problem.

What’s the biggest misconception about your job?

For me, the administrator’s role is often misunderstood. You need to have a broad base of knowledge to do the job, including an overview of the law, regulations, processes to name a few. It’s definitely not just a processing job, you need to be a jack of all trades.

Why did you go for the role you are in?

I spent eight years in a client-facing role and was ready for my next challenge. I wanted to gain experience in a new area and continue to learn and develop.

What’s the strangest or funniest thing that’s happened to you at work?

During the beginning of remote working, I received a voicemail on StarLeaf from our CEO Simon who could not figure out why I wasn’t talking back. I had a five-minute voicemail of “Kate? Kate? Kate? Are you there?”.

What traits in a person do you most admire and deplore?

I don’t believe you have to be mean to be successful in business, so I really admire people who go the other way and acknowledge that no matter who you are you’re there to do a good job. I admire positivity. I think you get the best out of people if you encourage and challenge them in the right way. The best relationships are open and truthful.

What do you do for fun?

At the moment I’m enjoying making my own clothes, including some really bad t-shirts! I also love the comedy circuit – I normally travel to see stand-up comedians and love going to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival each year. James Acaster and Ed Gamble are my favourite comedians at the moment.

What’s your hidden talent?

I wouldn’t say I have a hidden talent but I have tried so many things over the years. I have tried hobbies like playing the piano, sewing, knitting and baking but right now I’m trying to get into interior design through webinars and blogs so I can do up my house.

What was the highlight of your week?

The team had a huge project that has been on the books since last year, and it finally finished! It was a huge piece of work and was delivered successfully – I’m so proud of the team.

Who’s your hero?

Amelia Earhart – she was a pioneer and not afraid of anything!
Closer to home, I’d say my brother. He consistently achieves everything his sets his mind to and is the voice in my head pushing me to take the next challenge.

What’s the funniest joke you know by heart?

“Why do I get angry when I walk down the street?”

“Because green men make me cross!”

What makes someone succeed at Saltgate?

The opportunities are there at Saltgate, so if you approach them with a positive attitude and put your all into it you can do anything.

What’s your favourite part of Saltgate culture?

I’d say the access to the senior management team from a learning and development point of view – everyone is great to work with and willing to share their knowledge and experience.
