Setting our interns up for the future

Our interns’ experience on our summer programme sets a strong foundation for their career.

That’s why they’re fully immersed into our teams, with real day-to-day responsibilities at Saltgate.

Emma Pallent, an alumni intern, discovered the important role she played in her team, and how valuable her contributions were.

Where are you at in your studies?

I’ve just finished my first year at Newcastle University doing English Literature and History. My degree is split equally between the subjects and I find it really interesting.

What’s your role and what are your responsibilities within Saltgate?

As a summer intern I’m working in customer due diligence and risk assessment. I’ve also been writing up minutes for board meetings.

What are your hobbies or what do you do for fun?

I like art so I paint and draw often. I enjoy photography and do video editing from time to time. I love textiles and making clothes too.

What did you want to be when you were young?

I actually wanted to be a window cleaner – it looked so fun!

Do you have a hidden talent?

I guess it would be my art skills.

What’s your favourite part of your role?

I really like the social aspect of my role as I enjoy getting to know different types of people. I really like the training sessions too – I find them really interesting.

What’s been the best experience you’ve has as an intern at Saltgate?

When I was an intern last year, I really enjoyed doing our group project – it was definitely my favourite thing to do. I liked doing the presenting, and everyone was really nice!

What’s been the most surprising thing?

When I first joined, I expected to be scanning or doing odd jobs. I didn’t expect to have important responsibilities, such as writing minutes.

What advice would you give a student considering an internship or work experience?

I would say get involved, don’t worry if you don’t know something, and don’t be scared to get something wrong. Everyone is in the same boat and they won’t know everything either. Take it as a learning experience.

What’s your favourite part of Saltgate culture?

I like that it’s flat plan in the office – everyone is together and people aren’t in offices. It’s great that you can see everyone!
